Idayilakkadu monkey group

The Nileshwar backwaters, a large body of scenic backwaters is fed by four rivers. The backwaters get their name from Valiyaparamba Island, which is about 10 km south of Nileswaram by road. This island separated from the mainland is also a prominent fishing centre.

The four rivers include River Tejaswini and happy houseboat cruise through its waters, with views of arecanut groves and coconut palms, is pure delight. You will also be able to see the beaches. One of the beautiful little islands that you encounter on your way is Idayilakkadu. The presence of serpent groves and the presence of monkeys here add to its appeal.

The serpent groves are sacred groves with idols of snakes, usually adjoining traditional ancestral houses in Kerala. They have both religious and ecological significance as the area surrounding the shrines offer shelter to various snakes, squirrels, birds and other small creatures and also harbors various plants. No one disturbs the eco-system of these revered places.

During the cruise, you can also have a close-up of village life on the green leafy banks and enjoy the picturesque beauty of the vast river. The Bekal Resorts Development Corporation provides houseboat services on the Tejaswini River from Kottapuram in Neeleshwaram to Kannur, through the Valiyaparamba backwaters. Apart from the cruises, dinner at an island, canoeing and so on can also be arranged.
